Local Area Information

Wyke Regis, England, United Kingdom

Situated in Wyke Regis which lies between the town of Weymouth and the tied Island of Portland we feel we have the best of both worlds!
The cottage is quiet in a village location close to Wyke Old Village Square and beautiful ancient church.
Minutes away from small local sandy beaches and coves, the South West Coast path, bus routes into Weymouth, Portland and surrounding areas.
Perfect stop over for the Portland leg of the SWCP which can be done in a day including lunch at the Lobster Pot cafe at Portland Bill or the Jailhouse Cafe with probably the most stunning views of the bay you will find.
Our local beaches are amazing and safe for swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding etc which can be hired or lessons given nearby. Portland is a Mecca for adventurous activities such as climbing and kite surfing. The National Sailing academy is just over a mile away from the cottage.
The world famous Chesil beach is just a short walk with its gazillions of pebbles which sweep along the stunning coastline.
Easy walk to Billy Winters Beach bar, Friendly local pub (The Wyke Smugglers, quiz night Thursday), the famous Crab House cafe and Oyster Farm all serving food plus Tesco Express, bakery, cafe and takeaways (fish & chips, Chinese, pizza). A few local shops also include a fishing shop, Weldmar Charity shop and water sports shop. Also small local library and The Veterans Hub cafe & shop, open to the public but supporting (and giving a very warm welcome to) Armed Forces Veterans.
Lovely coastal walking trails all around and various playgrounds and a public skate park not too far away.
Weymouth town centre with its many shops, pubs, bars, cafes, parks etc can be walked along a walking/cycle path called the Rodwell Trail or is a short car/bus/taxi ride (approx £5). Once in town during the summer there is a land train that runs along the Esplanade.
Also in Weymouth is our stunning harbour, sandy beach and attractions such as The Nothe Fort, Sealife Centre & Pavilion Theatre.
Scenic boat trips or a jet boat ride can be taken from the harbour (also amazing fish and chips!) plus other activities such as jet-ski tours, crabbing and the many pubs/cafes with outside seating to take in the sights and sounds of the harbour -side.
Lots of opportunities to try water sports such as paddle boarding or kayaking in Portland harbour, venue for the 2012 Olympic Games. Visit the National Sailing Academy a few minutes away. Many climbing opportunities on Portland + new indoor climbing gym.  Lots of free activities in the area such as crabbing, Tout quarry sculpture park, Weymouth main beach and our lovely local beaches safe for swimming SUP etc.
We are also extremely fortunate to have 2 secure off lead facilities within a short drive. These are Moorfield Dog park on Portland and Hounds and Hooves near Dorchester. Both can be exclusively hired and except ALL breeds.
